profile

Dr. Xiaoli Tan is a Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Iowa State University. He graduated with a PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2002. Right after that he joined the Iowa State University as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2008, then to Professor in 2013. Prof. Tan’s past research has been focused on the composition-processing-structure-property interrelationship in electroceramics. He developed an in situ transmission electron microscopy technique that allows application of electric fields to specimens while imaging. With this powerful technique, he has made a number of direct observations of the responses of multifunctional ceramics to electrical stimuli in real time with nanometer resolution. His active research, especially in ferroelectrics and piezoelectrics, has led to ~130 refereed journal publications and about 60 invited talks. According to Web of Science, his papers have received 2900 citations and his h-index is 30.
